Drums Instructor
  • Name: Rebecca Hanten
  • Email: rebeccalhanten@gmail.com
  • About:

I started playing drums when I was in 6th grade, about 20 years ago. When it was time to join the school band, I wanted to try the saxophone, but my best friend was convinced that she wanted to "bang the drums." We were inseparable and she was the bossy one, so I conceded and chose to play the drums too. After starting the band, I knew my friend was onto something because I LOVED playing the drums and became a fanatic at an early age. My best friend quit the school band in middle school but I always thank her for convincing me to "bang the drums" and, in turn, develop a life-long passion. Throughout high school, I played in Concert band, Marching band, Jazz band, and my own rock bands while taking private lessons throughout. The summer after high school, I joined a regional all-drum Drum Corp, called "Su Fu Du," which performed nearly every weekend that summer. Since then, I have traveled all over the country and internationally with various touring rock bands performing everywhere from small clubs to House of Blues'. I perform locally about twice a month with my current band, The Evening Rig. Teaching lessons is relatively new to me but receiving lessons is not. I know what worked well for me when I was taking lessons and want to share that experience with my own students. I strive for a unique and personal journey through the musical path that the student wants to take. From expanding knowledge received in school band, to experimenting with their own musical endeavors.

Pedal Steel Instructor
  • Name: Jim Johnson
  • Email: jimmyjbigs@yahoo.com
  • About:

I bought my first steel guitar, an old Sho-Bud, back in '92. I set it up and never put it away. I learned by playing along with songs and artists that inspired me to sit behind the steel and find the stuff I was hearing. There was a lot of Buck Owens and other west coast 60's country...featuring Ralph Mooney on steel; the Nashville players like Hal Rugg, Buddy Emmons, Jimmy Day, Curly Chalker, etc; The Byrds, Doug Sahm, and other 60's country rockers; 70's stuff from Waylon, Neil Young, etc; alt country players like Eric Heywood, Lloyd Maines, Greg Leisz .....anything with steel catches my ear. I love the sound and what it adds and continue to try to find the stuff that I'm hearing. I don't know theory well enough to teach it, but I can help you with the basics and help you find stuff on the E9th neck. I've also learned from playing on stage with a number of twin citites bands and spent some time in recording studios. I'm new to teaching but look forward to giving it a try. I'm best suited to give beginning lessons and inspire new players. If you love pedal steel like I do, we can have fun figuring it out and I might even share some of my record collection to inspire you.

  • About:

Hi, I'm Lila. I've been playing guitar since high school, originally inspired by listening to a local rock station on the East Coast. After college I moved to California and completed the Musicians Institute of Technology Professional Guitar program, then arrived in Minneapolis to join the local music scene. Through the years I have played, performed, and recorded with various types of rock bands, mostly original music ranging from grunge and hard rock to pop and fusion-influenced odd-meter rock. Recently I've been exploring fingerstyle and writing acoustic instrumentals. I am excited to be teaching guitar. My students range in age from children to people in their 50's and beyond. I find that each student is unique, and I aim to tailor my lessons according to the way the student learns best, and his or her musical taste.
